Yiquan

Wang Xiangzhai (1885-1963) the creator of Yiquan, sometimes called Dacheng Quan

Yi Quan (意拳) - one of the Chinese martial arts systems, also known as the " fist of reason (great limit)"; her "twin brother" is Dachengquan (although essentially the same thing).

Yiquan, sometimes called Dacheng Quan, is a relatively new martial art - it was created in the 1920s by Wang Xiangzhai (1885-1963). Wang Xiangzhai was looking for the best martial artists of his time to understand "the essence of hand-to-hand combat." He later created a new art, discarding, over time, the non-essential and what could be replaced by one that gave better or faster results. Gradually, internal aspects appeared in the system that began to dominate all the other parts.

To emphasize the importance of consciousness, both in training and combat use, he decided to name his art Yi Quan : “I” means consciousness or intention in this case, “Quan” means fist . The name was probably obtained due to the exclusion of the Xin part (form) from the name of the martial art of Xingyiquan , from which Wang Xiangzhai basically repelled when creating his system. At the same time, Taijiquan Wu Hao, with its neutralization and pushing by hands, also had a powerful influence on his system. Ultimately, he came to see Yi Quan not only as a martial art or a system of health-improving gymnastics, continuing to covertly teach the martial aspect to only a few close students.

He had many opportunities to test the value of Yiquan as a martial art. He believed that all schools of martial arts are flawed and "take students further from the goal." He did not try to keep his views to himself, and when he was heading to Beijing, in the late 1930s, Wang Xiangzhai challenged all his BI colleagues to “exchange ideas and learn from each other.” Since the challenge was open, there was no shortage of opponents. Any applicant should first defeat one of the four best students of Wang Xiangzhai, but none of them succeeded. The four students were Han Xinqiao, Hong Lianshun, Yao Zongxun (a possible successor to Wang Xiangzhai), and Zhou Ziyan. Yi Quan quickly gained a reputation as a very effective fighting style (and later, Qi Quan's health benefits were revealed). At this time, Wang Xiangzhai changed the name of Yiquan, as he felt that the name limited the idea of art.

His students and the public, in view of successes, began to call the Dachenquan style (Fist of Great Achievement) and Wang Xiangzhai, after a little resistance, adopted a new name. However, he later returned to the name of Yiquan again, as he again began to believe that it better suits his art.

Training methods of Qiquan, allows you to develop a powerful internal effort, gain health and superpowers, at the highest stages of mastery "formless strength" is acquired.

Ancient knowledge, which has come down to us in the form of Yiquan, allows us to include the deep mechanisms of our psyche, aimed both at self-healing and at increasing the energy level of students.

It is wisdom that is capable of destruction, but created for creation.

Training

Complete training consists of seven steps:

  • Zhanzhuang (pillar work) (站樁).
  • Shi Li (Test of Strength) (試 力) - simple exercises in order to learn how to control the connection of the whole body and the strength of the whole body in motion - in other words, learn how to use the internal force.
  • Mo Tsa Boo (Step Friction) (摩擦 步) - Learning how to hold the connection of the whole body and the strength of the whole body while moving.
  • Fa Li (Burst of Force) (發 力) is a study of how to “throw out” a force using internal force rather than physical force. How to throw it in any direction and any part of the body.
  • Tuishou (Pushing Hands) (推 手) - this piece is similar to Pushing Hands in Taijiquan (taken from Wu-Hao style), but with its own characteristics.
  • Shi Sheng (Voice Test) (試 声) - methods of increasing the power of the ejection of internal strength, using a cry.
  • Sanshaw (Zhi Zhi Fa) (散 手) (Combat Practice) - free sparring. At all stages of training, students must follow the most important principle - Use consciousness, not strength ("yong yi bu yong li").
