Style History
The style for a long time was transmitted only among Chinese Muslims . Its founder is Wu Zhong (吴 钟, 1712–1802) from Zhili Province. He himself learned this art from a wandering Taoist monk, who is known only under the nickname "Lai" ("Leper"). Wu Zhong was an excellent spear fighter and had the nickname "W - The Magic Spear." During his life, he trained over one hundred and fifty fighters, his daughter Wu Rong (吴荣), friend Wu Yong (吴永) and brother Wu Yun - Wu Zhongyuy (吴钟毓) completely took over his art. Wu Yong was from the Mengcun village of Cangzhou County, and since then Mengcun and the neighboring village of Lothong became the “homeland of Baji”, and this is where this style lived and developed. At the beginning of the XX century, the following bajiquan branches were distinguished:
- Bajiquan of the Wu family, coming from master Wu Huiqing (吴会清). Wu Huiqing’s son, Wu Xiufeng (吴秀峰), developed a lot of new complexes and did a lot to spread this direction.
- Bajiquan of the Qiang family, coming from the master Qiang Ruijing (强 瑞 清). This direction also incorporates the techniques of tambitsuan, piguatsuan and xingyiquan.
- Li Family Bajiquan, coming from Master Li Shuwen (李书文). Since Master Lee taught his whole life, the technique that he taught at the end of his life was different from the one he originally taught.
- Bajiquan of the Ho family, coming from master Ho Diange (霍 殿阁). Ho Diange studied under young Li Shuwen and creatively developed what he learned.
- Bajiquan of the Ma family, coming from master Ma Fentu (马 凤 图). Mother Ma Feng belonged to the Wu genus, so he studied orthodox bajicuan, subsequently met Li Shuwen and adopted his designs, and added methods for ejecting efforts from tunebiquan.
A characteristic feature of bajiquan is a special explosive release of force in impact. To generate the force, two special types of displacement are used: the “rubbing step” and the “trampling splitting step”. Due to these special types of movement during the training of the bajiquan masters during impacts on the ground, there were grooves from foot movements during impacts, therefore the sayings were born saying “the fist is drawing on the ground” and “bazi, bazi - the leg does not lift off the ground”. Blows were usually delivered with fists, palms, elbows, knees and shoulders. The feet in an orthodox bajiquan were beaten no higher than the knee. Elbow punches are considered to be “proprietary” methods of bajiquan; there is the expression “72 bajiquan elbows”.
Style Features
The basis of training without weapons in bajiquan is considered to be “six large disclosures” ( Chinese trade. 六大 开 , pall .: Ludakai ) and “eight large receptions” ( Chinese trade. 八大 招 , pall .: Badachzhao ). "Six large disclosures" - these are six methods of cracking the enemy’s defense, six types of hand actions. Since the breach in the enemy’s defense is called “open gates”, sometimes this term is written with other hieroglyphs meaning “six penetrations” ( Chinese trad. 六 пал , pall .: Lyudakai ) (six ways of “breaking through the gates” are meant). The Eight Great Tricks are the eight basic techniques of bajiquan.
The basis of bajiquan is the generation of effort, so at first the practitioner is in serious danger: the ability to generate effort develops faster than the body strengthens, so when hitting hard objects there is a danger of breaking your arms, and when training in a pair there is a high risk of injuring your partner.
