The mentor method is a method of directional development (“education”) of young hybrid plants when they are grafted onto another variety developed by I. V. Michurin . The method is based on the effect of a plant-educator (mentor) of one variety on a plant of another variety after vaccination.
When using the mentor method, Michurin observed a deep formative effect of various substances of an already established plant variety on a hybrid developing organism.
The mentor method is used for
- eliminate the disadvantages of hybrid plants
- to enhance the desirable properties of hybrid plants when breeding new varieties.
I. V. Michurin used the mentor method in breeding varieties
- apple trees (Bellefleur Chinese, Kandil Chinese)
- pears (Bergamot Novik)
- cherries (Beauty of the North) and other plants
When using the mentor method
- frost resistance increased
- improved fruit quality
- other beneficial effects were observed
In accordance with the information in the Great Soviet Encyclopedia, the changes obtained are consolidated only during vegetative reproduction of a new variety.
