Biography
Born on June 12 ( 24 ), 1828 in the parish of Somero, Abo-Bjørneborg province ( Grand Duchy of Finland ). Nephew of the famous chemist and mineralogist Johan Gadolin [1] .
At the end of his education in the Finnish Cadet Corps in 1844 he was released as an officer in the Life Guards Pavlovsky Regiment .
After completing the course at the Mikhailovsky Artillery Academy , in 1849 he was appointed to the post of tutor of physics at the Artillery School .
In 1859 he was appointed class inspector of the Artillery School, and in 1866 he was approved as a professor of technology at the Artillery Academy and was promoted to major general . On November 27, 1870, he was enlisted in His Imperial Majesty the Suite, and on August 30, 1876 he was promoted to lieutenant general .
In addition, Gadolin took the place of inspector of local arsenals, and in 1886 he was appointed a permanent member of the artillery committee. Also, since 1872, he was a professor at the St. Petersburg Technological Institute in the department of mechanical technology [2] .
In 1855, being on the batteries of the Sveaborg fortress during the bombardment by its Anglo-French fleet , thanks to vigorously taken measures, he extinguished the powdery cellar that was ignited by the enemy bomb, for which 15 years later (along with Colonel Lyubovitsky ) he was awarded the Order of St. George the 4th degrees.
He died on December 15 ( 27 ), 1892 in St. Petersburg .
Bibliography
- "Determination of the crystalline form of the newly discovered salts of isocyanuric acid potassium and ammonia ." Shishkov's article in Bulletin de l'Acad. des sciences de St-Pétersbourg ", XIV, 97 (1856);
- “Beobachtungen über einige Mineralien aus Pitkäranta” (“Verhandlungen der KR Mineralogischen Gesellschaft”). ** Some rare forms of pomegranate , sulfur pyrite and tin stone are described; Some new forms of the latter mineral were identified and facts indicating the water formation of quartz, pomegranate, and the entire Pitkerand ore bed are presented. In addition, the author's experiments on the action of the crystal-forming force at noticeable distances through a layer of foreign substance are described.
- “Determination by means of a specially constructed device for this, of the shear resistance of certain alloys, in order to determine the composition of the best alloy for projections of shells” (1857, in the “Reference Book for Artillery Officers” by Schwartz and Kryzhanovsky in 1863, in the chapter “Miscellaneous Information”);
- Geognostische Beschreibung der Insel Pusu and Geogn. Skizze der Umgebungen von Kronoborg und Tervus ”(Verh. Der KR Miner. Gesellsch. Zu St.-Petersburg, 18 57) contains a description of the bedding and composition of the rocks of these areas, which are compiled by geological maps.
- Eine einfache Methode zur Bestimmung der specifischen Gewichtes der Mineralien (Verh. Der KR Miner. Gesellsch., 1857; and Poggendorffs Annalen, CVI, 213, 1859);
- "On the resistance of the walls of the guns to the pressure of powder gases" ("Artiller. Journal", 1858).
- In this article, the author gives a conclusion to the Lachet formula for cylinder resistance to internal pressure, shows that this formula gives the greatest limit of true resistance, and derives a new formula for the smallest limit of this resistance.
- The method used in this article was applied by Clebsch in Theorie des Elasticität fester Körper to derive general equilibrium equations for solids.
- “The theory of guns fastened with hoops” (“Artill. Zhurn.”, 1861, No. 12) —the theory of resistance of guns fastened with one or two layers of hoops is given here, and the rules for fastening are indicated.
- The last two articles are also published in French in the Revue de Technologie Militaire par Terssen, vol. III, 1863.
- This theory in 1862 was extended by Gadolin to an arbitrary number of layers, and it is now guided by it when bonding tools. The mentioned articles were awarded the Great Mikhailovsky Prize in 1867.
- “Captain Radman’s instrument for measuring the pressure of powder gases on the walls of the gun” (“Artillery Journal.”, 1861).
- "On New Improvements in Casting Iron Cast Iron Tools in America" (The Artillery Journal, 1862). This article, which represents the processing of information obtained by Gadolin when he was in America in 1860, was placed by Malet in the English translation of the Practical Mechanics Journal (Volume III, 1867-1868).
- As a result of the articles just mentioned, they were introduced in our artillery: a change in the rules for the preparation and reception of cast iron tools, the introduction of casting of these tools on a core with internal cooling, the introduction of prismatic powder and a Radman device for determining the pressure of powder gases.
- “The derivation of all crystallographic systems and their units from a common beginning” (1867, in “Notes of the Imperial Russian Mineral Society.”, IV, 1869) and in French: “Me m. sur la déduct, d'un seul princ. de tous les syst. crislall. ”(Acta Societatis Scientiarum Fennicae, IX, 1871).
- The article determines on the basis of a theoretical conclusion which crystallographic groups are possible and what each group is characterized by, and it proves the impossibility of the existence of many groups created by previous authors, and some new ones are established. Some of the conclusions of this article are subsequently confirmed by observations of crystallographers. For this article, the author was awarded the Lomonosov Prize by the Academy of Sciences.
- Witworth's Moving Star (Artillery Journal, 1868, No. 4). As a result of this article, the Whitworth star for measuring gun channels began to be used in our artillery.
- "On the resistance of the guns to the opening of the breech when used to lock the mechanism of Trell de Beaulieu " ("Artill. Zhurn.", 1869, No. 2).
- In this article, on the basis of the general equations of equilibrium of elastic bodies, the nut is torn off when the screw acts on its axis, and the rules for the design of the Trell de Beaulieu mechanism used with benefit to the tools manufactured at the Perm Cannon Plant are indicated.
- “Theory of the device for changing the speeds of the working movement on turning and drilling machines” (1877, in Izvestia Technological Institute, p. 129).
- “On the Law of Measurability of the Wind” (1890, in the appendices to LXII of the “Notes of the Imperial Academy of Sciences ”).
Gadolin edited and published training courses (for the Artillery Academy and for the Institute of Technology):
- "The course on the caloric" (1853-1858);
