ISO 3166-3 is a part of the ISO 3166 standard containing codes for names of already non-existent states (association, division, change of name, etc.). First published in 1999 .
If after 1974 the country
- joined the others
- disintegrated (for example, Czechoslovakia )
- changed their name (for example, Upper Volta )
their abbreviations are deleted from ISO 3166-1 and, with the addition of two additional letters, are entered in ISO 3166-3. In this case, the first two letters represent the old code according to ISO 3166-1 and the last two - the new code from ISO 3166-1. If there is no unambiguous follower, then the last letters will be HH. For the Union of Serbia and Montenegro, which had the abbreviation CS, the abbreviation CSXX instead of CSHH was defined in 2006 so as not to be confused with the CSHH code for the former Czechoslovakia.
Examples:
- The GDR (DD) was included in the FRG (DE), this ended its existence. Therefore, according to ISO 3166-3, the abbreviation for the GDR is DDDE.
- Czechoslovakia (CS) fell to the Czech Republic (CZ) and Slovakia (SK). Therefore, the code of the former country according to ISO 3166-3 is CSHH.
- Upper Volta (HV) was renamed Burkina Faso (BF). According to ISO 3166-3 code for Upper Volta HVBF.
