Chris Plain on Mars Map
The range of the landing site of the spacecraft Viking 1
The name is taken from the ancient Greek language and means "golden plain". The center of the plain with a diameter of 1600 km and a depth of 2.5 km is located at 27 ° north latitude and 37 ° west longitude. The plain area is about 500,000 km².
Since the region is interesting from a geological point of view, two spacecraft landed here:
- On July 20, 1976, the Martian station Viking 1 sat down. She worked until November 11, 1982. The station transmitted the first images of the surface of Mars.
- On the edge of the plain on July 4, 1997, the Martian station Mars Pathfinder , equipped with a rover, sat down. Until September 27, 1997, she examined the surface near the landing site.
