Born in Catalonia , in a noble family. He served in public service in Italy and Portugal, then in 1767 he was appointed vice-king of California. Following the ban of the Jesuit Order by Charles III , Gaspard Portole was instructed to expel the Jesuits from both California. Fourteen missions were confiscated and transferred to the Franciscans and, somewhat later, to the Dominicans.
In 1769 and 1770, Gaspar Portola led a sea and land expedition to northern California. He later served as governor of Puebla in Mexico . The rest of his life was spent in Spain, colonel of a dragoon regiment.
