History

It dates back to the 4th – 6th centuries and is recognized as an Armenian example of an oriental architectural type [8] . According to legend, the name was built on the site of a pagan temple: “Tsitsernak” in Armenian means “swallow”, and the cult of swallow in pre-Christian Armenia was one of the most common.

It was located in the Achaechk Gavar province of Syunik . The only surviving church of St. George the Victorious , made of clean hewn stone, was opened after restoration in 1999-2000. [14] The territory of the monastery was once surrounded by a wall, from which remained in the western part of the gate. Several vaulted rooms adjoin the south, and a medieval Armenian cemetery is located in the north of the monastery.

The hypotheses of the origin of Ereruk are different (see Alpago Novello's remarks on this subject, “the basilica of Ereruk, critical notes”, in Documenti di Architectura Armena 9, Milan 1977) and strongly recommend visiting this building, and not purely Armenian examples of the “eastern” type such as Tsitsernavank, Ashtarak and Aparan-K'azah, limiting Syrian influence on elements and decoration.
