Researcher and connoisseur of the flora of the Bialowieza Forest.

In his work “Description of the Vegetation of the Kherson Province ” he developed the doctrine of the intrazonality of landscapes , establishing the concepts of extrazonal and azonal vegetation . The first represents areas of zonal vegetation found to the north or south of the main area of zonal distribution; the second is natural vegetation found in all zones on unclosed habitats .

He first proposed (1915) the concept of phytocenosis , using it for “pure thickets”.
