The building of Galytsky governorship (now the building of the Lviv Regional Council and the Lviv Regional State Administration) is an architectural monument of national significance [1] in Lviv ( Ukraine ). An example of a large administrative building of the Austro-Hungarian Empire of the second half of the nineteenth century; executed in historical neo - renaissance style .
Content
Location
The construction is located outside the eastern border of the medieval city and occupies a corner section, with the western facade facing Vinnichenko Street, and the north facade - Prosvity Street. The governors palace adjoins the building on the south side. On the north side, behind Prosvity Street, there is a site occupied by the Barefoot Carmelite Church . In front of the building there is a square with a monument to Vyacheslav Chornovil (chairman of the Lviv Regional Council in the early 1990s). Address: Vinnichenko Street, 18 (formerly Radyanskaya, during the Nazi occupation - District Strasse, in the interwar period - Charnetskogo Street, in the Austro-Hungarian period - Governor's Shafts).
History
This monumental building was built in 1870-1878 by architects F. Ksenzharsky and S. Gavrishkevich. Until 1918, the building housed the Galician governorship , the highest executive authority in the Kingdom of Galicia and Lodomeria . During the First World War , the headquarters of the 8th Russian Army was located here [2] . In the interwar period, the Polish voivodship office was located here, during the Nazi occupation - the administration of the governor of the District Galicia [3] . On April 28, 1943 , a solemn ceremony was held here on the occasion of the organization of the SS division "Galicia" , in which representatives of the government, the National Socialist Party [3] , the German army, former soldiers of the Ukrainian Galician army [3] , and representatives of the press took part; well-known collaborators Viktor Kurmanovich , Vladimir Kubiyovich attended [3] .
In the Soviet period, there was a regional committee of the Communist Party of Ukraine [4] .
Architecture
The building is rectangular in plan, with a closed courtyard, four-story, brick, plastered, completed with an attic roof. The facades are rusticated and symmetrical, vertically divided by krepovki, horizontally - stripes of cornices. On the main facade, the central axis is accented by a balcony of the second floor, mounted on four columns that flank the main entrance. The windows are rectangular in shape, framed. The sculptures were made by sculptor Leonard Marconi.
The building has a cabinet-corridor planning system. The main staircase dominates the complex of interiors (architect S. Gavrishkevich, sculptor L. Marconi).
