History

Founder of St. Congregation S. Papchinsky

Mariana was founded in Poland by a priest from the order of PRs Stanislav Papczynski. The date of creation of the order is considered to be 1673, in 1699 the charter of the Marians was approved by the Holy See . The goals of the new order were to spread veneration of the Virgin Mary , enlightenment, and help the diocesan clergy in pastoral work in parishes. Particular attention was paid to the mission of the order of youth education and the fight against alcoholism. The charter of the order was very severe, the monks devoted much time to prayer, reading spiritual literature and ascetic practices .

In the XVIII century, the order developed, the Marian missions were founded in several European countries, but in the XIX century, after the partition of the Commonwealth, the order was actually destroyed. After the Polish uprising of 1863-1864, the tsarist government dissolved the last Marian monastery (the last monastery in Marijampole was closed in 1865 ), many priests were repressed, and a few communities continued to exist underground. Communities of the order were also repressed in other European countries, as in 1834 the Portuguese anti-clerical government closed all Marian monasteries.

A successful attempt to revive the Marians was made at the beginning of the 20th century by a professor at the Theological Academy of St. Petersburg , subsequently bishop , blessed George Matulaitis (Matulevich) . He prepared the new Marian constitution, which provided for the transformation of the order into a congregation and took into account the circumstances of the life of clandestine religious communities. Pope Pius X approved the constitution on September 15, 1910 .

After Poland and Lithuania gained independence in the 1920s, the Marians received the long-awaited freedom of activity. In 1927, the number of Marians exceeded 300 people. Currently, the cloisters of the order exist in Poland, Lithuania, Latvia , Belarus , Kazakhstan , Ukraine , Slovakia , some countries of Western Europe and Latin America.
