He gained international popularity thanks to his films “ 8 Women ” ( 2002 ) and “ Pool ” ( 2003 ). Ozone is considered one of the most important French filmmakers of the “New Wave” in French cinema, along with Jean-Paul Siveirac , Philippe Ramos and Yves Comon , as well as a group of French filmmakers associated with the “cinema du corps / cinema of the body” ) [4] .
Biography
Ozone was born in Paris in the family of the biologist René Ozon and Anne-Marie Ozon, a French teacher. Francois has a brother Guillaume and a sister Julie. After completing his studies at the French film school La Femis ( French: La Femis ), Ozon made several short films, in particular, “Little Death” ( French La Petite Mort , 1995), “Summer Dress” ( French Une robe d 'été , 1996) and “Look at the Sea” ( French Regarde La Mer , 1997) (all three were released in Russia as a single collection under the general title “Narcissus at the Edge of the Summer”). In these and other short films of those years, the style characteristic of Ozone was already manifested. His first full-length directorial debut was the film "Ratman" ( Fr. Sitcom , 1998), which was well received by critics and viewers.
After adapting Fasbinder ’s script entitled “Raindrops on Hot Stones” ( Fr. Gouttes d'eau sur pierres brûlantes , 2000), Ozone made a film that made his name widely known outside of France - “ 8 Women ”, where they played a galaxy of French cinema stars like Catherine Deneuve , Isabelle Huppert , Daniel Darje , Fanny Ardant and Emmanuelle Beart . This film won commercial success largely due to the successful combination of musical retro numbers, the detective story of the murder of Robert Tom and scenography in the style of Hollywood films of the 1950s .
In 2003, the film "Swimming Pool" was released, in which Charlotte Rampling and Ludivine Sagnier starred. According to Ozone himself, this is a very personal film that reveals the secrets of hard work on writing a novel or script. "Pool" was the first English-language film director.
In 2004, Ozone completed work on the film " 5x2 ", which shows the five stages of the destruction of the marriage of two people. The year 2005 was marked by the release of the film “Farewell Time” ( French Le Temps Qui Reste ). The picture tells about the fate of a young gay photographer (performed by Melville Pupo ), who was diagnosed with incurable cancer and who is slowly dying away from the disease. From family and friends, he trusts the terrible news only to his grandmother (she is played by Jeanne Moreau ), whose relationship with him is unusually warm.
In 2007, the film "Angel" was released on the screens, shot on the story of the same name by Elizabeth Taylor . The picture, which takes place in England at the beginning of the 20th century, tells about the fate of the writer Angel Deverell. The film was mainly shot at the Tintesfield estate near Bristol , as well as in other parts of the UK and in Belgium.
His film Shelter was presented at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2009.
Ozone was a member of the jury of the 62nd International Berlin Film Festival , which was held in February 2012. [five]
His 2013 film, Young and Beautiful , was nominated for the Golden Palm Branch of the Cannes Film Festival . [6] Ozone received the Academy Award for Best Screenwriter for the 2012 film " In the House ." [7]
His 2014 film New Girlfriend was presented at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2014. [eight]
In 2016, the movie " Franz " was released.
Many of his films have been awarded at international film festivals. In 2019, the film “ By the Grace of God ” by Francois Ozon, telling about the fate of a Catholic priest accused of pedophilia, received the Grand Prix of the 69th Berlin Film Festival [9] .
