James Levine , also Levine [1] ( born James Levine , born June 23, 1943 , Cincinnati , USA ) is an American conductor. Artistic Director and Principal Conductor of the New York Metropolitan Theater ( 1976 - 2018 ).

Biography

Grandfather was a cantor in the synagogue, father - Laurence Levine - violinist, mother - Helen Godstein - actress. He began to study music as a child, at the age of 10 he gave his first public performance: he performed Mendelssohn's Second Piano Concerto with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra . In 1956 he took lessons from Rudolf Serkin at the Marlborough School of Music , then from Rosina Levina at the Aspen School of Music. He studied conductor's art at the Juilliard School ( 1961 - 1964 ) with Jean Morel .

In 1964 - 1965 he was a student of George Sell in the Cleveland Orchestra , and then, until 1970 , his second conductor. In 1970 he made his debut as a guest conductor with the Philadelphia Orchestra and the San Francisco Opera .

Career

One of the most successful and outstanding musicians of our time . One of the most sought after conductors in the world. Musical and then artistic director of the Metropolitan Opera (since 1976 ). Musical Director of the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra ( 1999 - 2004 ), Boston Symphony Orchestra ( 2004 - 2012). He also conducted other major and most famous orchestras in Europe and the USA. He performed at the Salzburg and Bayreuth festivals .

Sexual harassment charges

In early December 2017, James Levine was charged with sexual harassment. [2] In March next year, the leadership of the Metropolitan Opera decided to terminate cooperation with the conductor in connection with allegations of inappropriate behavior [3] .

The Levine conductor's repertoire covers music from Bach to Xenakis . He also performs as an opera conductor ( Mozart , Wagner , Puccini , Verdi , etc.).
