Viskovatov, Pavel Alexandrovich

Pavel Aleksandr Viskovatov ( Whiskey ; November 24 ( December 6 ), 1842 - April 16 (29), 1905 , St. Petersburg ) is a Russian literary historian.

Biography

The son of a military historian Alexander Vasilievich Viskovatov . He studied at St. Petersburg University , then - in Germany . In 1866 he received a Ph.D. from the University of Leipzig for his dissertation on the humanist Jacob Wimpfeling .

He entered service on July 28, 1868, and until 1871 he was an official on special assignments under Field Marshal Prince A. I. Baryatinsky .

In 1871, he lectured at St. Petersburg University. In 1873 he edited the newspaper Russkiy Mir and from the same year he began to teach at the University of Derpt , since 1880 - professor of Russian literature. He lectured on the history of Russian, Serbian, Bulgarian literature.

In 1875 he wrote the libretto for the opera Demon by Anton Rubinstein based on the poem of the same name by Lermontov, staged at the Mariinsky Theater .

It was approved on February 27, 1896 as a junior censor of the Central Committee of Foreign Censorship . From November 2, 1896 to November 26, 1901 he was in the position of senior censor. At the same time from 1897 to 1901 he was the director of the Wiedemann Grammar School in St. Petersburg. Since 1901 - retired [2] .

Since December 22, 1889 he was a member of the full state councilor. He was awarded the Russian orders: St. Stanislav 2nd art. (1881), St. Anne of the 2nd art. (1885), St. Vladimir 3rd art. (1898); as well as foreign orders: the Prussian Order of the Crown of the 2nd art. (1871) and the Serbian Order of the Cross of the 2nd art. (1882) [3] .

The main subject of his studies is the biographies of M. Yu. Lermontov , which is the subject of a number of articles in Russian Thought , Russian Herald and other journals . Under the editorship of Pavel Aleksandrovich, a collection of works by Lermontov with the first scientific biography of the poet was published in Moscow (1891). Viskovatov found and printed a lot of Lermontov’s works, materials for his biography and wrote a series of small studies on the history of his work, published in Russian Antiquity , Russian Bulletin , Russian Thought , Bulletin of Europe and others. Lermontov’s biography written by him , which compiled the sixth volume of the edition of Lermontov’s works edited by him (Moscow, 1891 ), is valuable mainly as a summary of carefully collected factual data. The text edition is not distinguished by the systematic and thorough methods.

He was married to Catherine Corsini (1838-1911, daughter of M.A. Corsini .

He was buried in the Smolensk Orthodox cemetery .
