Geography

It is the sixth largest territory among the departments of Colombia. 80% of the department is occupied by mountains. The central part of the department is occupied by the Western Cordillera of the Colombian Andes and the Antioquia Massif, separated by the Cauca River Valley. From the east, the Central Cordilleras approach the massif. Plains with a hot and humid climate are widespread in the north, west, and east.

The average temperatures in Medellin are 20-21 ° C. Precipitation is 1500-2000 millimeters per year.

The largest rivers of the department are Magdalena and Cauca.

Forests occupy about 50% of the territory. The eastern leeward slopes of the Western Cordillera are arid, with forests starting at 2,500 meters. Both slopes of the Central Cordillera are covered with tropical rainforests.
