From 1899 to 1905, the construction of a brick factory “Azeri” was underway in the village, which released its first products in 1902.

In 1920, OÜ Saue started producing bricks in Meriküla , from 1935-1937 it was transformed into the state company AS Telliskivide Tehased.

In 1939, the port of Azeri and the Sonda-Azeri railway were built near the Meriküla brick factory on Meriküla Beach.

The pier and railway were destroyed during World War II in the summer of 1944, during the retreat of German troops.

Kalotex AS began the restoration of the port of Azeri in 1999, later Select Oil NV continued its operations, but in 2009 it went bankrupt.
