He studied at the University of Leipzig for some time. He made his debut in print in 1872 , releasing in Vienna a separate pamphlet on the life and work of the famous 18th-century German actor Konrad Eckhof . Later he published a number of reference books on German theater - in particular, the Chronology of Theaters ( German: Chronologie des Theaters ; 1876 - 1877 ) and several volumes of theatrical obituaries. Since 1881 he edited a number of magazines, including 1881 Vom Fels zum Meer, Neue Zeit, Deutsche Schriftstellerzeitung. He was the compiler of small encyclopedic dictionaries "Kürschner's Taschen-Conversations-Lexikon" (Stuttgart, 1884 ) and "Kürschner's Quart-Lexikon" (ibid, 1888 ). He also edited the Wagner Yearbook. In 1899 he became one of the founders of the Society of Bibliophiles.
