Born in a noble family. In 1606 published the "Poetic Sample" ( Spanish Ejemplar poético ). This is the first attempt in Spanish literature to create in the didactic poem imbued with the national spirit rules on poetic art, something like the "Poetics" of Horace . Written by tercets, Cueva's Ejemplar poético contains many clever criticisms, but there is no method or consistency in it. Cueva wrote many talented, but little sustained works from various fields of literature. Of the Cueva dramas, the best are “Comedia del sacro de Roma y muerte de Borbón”, “Siete Infantes de Lara”, “Bernardo de Carpio”. The comedy “The Slanderer” ( Spanish El Infamador ) is interesting because its hero, Leucino, served Tirso de Molina as one of the sources of Don Juan's image.
