Biography

Born on November 2 (14), 1831 [1] in the city of Vladimir, in an old merchant family, relocated there for sedition even after the fall of Novgorod under Ivan the Terrible.

He received a secondary education in the Vladimir gymnasium , which he graduated in 1850 with a gold medal. In the same year, he entered the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics of Moscow University , where his younger brother Alexander later became a world-famous scientist.

The last year of Nikolai Stoletov at the university coincided with the beginning of the Crimean War of 1853-1856. that decisively influenced his entire fate. In the spring of 1854 , after graduating from the university, full of patriotic feelings, Nikolai Grigorievich volunteered as a volunteer to join the Russian Imperial Army — he was determined to be a fireworker in the light battery number 10th artillery brigade. As part of this battery, the Stoletov fireworker participated in the battle of Inkerman (October 24 / November 5, 1854) and in the defense of Sevastopol . In the garrison of the fortress, he was from mid-March to late April 1855 , defending the 4th bastion, the Zabudsky battery and the Schwartz redoubt. In May 1855, he was promoted to officer, assigned to a light battery of the 8th Artillery Brigade, in which he participated in the battle on the Black River (August 4/16, 1855). For the difference in the fighting in the Crimea, Nikolai Stoletov was awarded the distinction of the Military Order .

After the Crimean War in 1857 he entered, and in 1859 he graduated from the Nikolaev Academy of the General Staff . From December 1859 he served in the Caucasian Army and participated in the Caucasian War . From May 1860 - Assistant Chief of the 2nd Division for the General Staff under the Commander-in-Chief of the Caucasian Army. From 1861 he participated in the battles in the Caucasus as part of the Adagum detachment, from November 1863 - head of the troops of the Zakatala district in Dagestan.

In January 1867 he was transferred to Turkestan , where in June of the same year he was appointed governor of the office of the military-national administration of the Turkestan region. In the same year he visited Persia and Afghanistan as part of a diplomatic mission. In October 1869, he led the Krasnovodsk detachment, which conquered the eastern shore of the Caspian Sea, where the city of Krasnovodsk was also founded. From 1872 - commander of the 112th Ural Infantry Regiment in Turkestan. At the beginning of 1874, Stoletov led a scientific Amudarya geographical expedition, the results of which were awarded the gold medal of the Imperial Geographical Society . From 1875 - commander of the 1st brigade of the 17th infantry division.

Before the beginning of the Russian-Turkish warriors of 1877-1878. in the rank of Major General Nikolai Grigorievich in October 1876 he was appointed head of the Bulgarian militia , which he was to form. By May 1877, he successfully completed the task, creating 6 teams of more than 5,000 people. In June 1877, he arrived at the theater of war with the militia and fought in the Balkans together with the Russian troops. In July-August 1877, he took part in the leadership of the defense of Shipka , later commanded the vanguard of the column of General MD Skobelev when crossing the Balkans and in the battle for Sheinovo . For distinction in battles during the liberation of Bulgaria, N. G. Stoletov was awarded the Order of St. George, IV degree, St. Vladimir, II degree and St. Anna, I degree - both with swords.

From February 1878, Stoletov was at the disposal of the Commander of the Turkestan Military District , and since April of this year he headed a diplomatic mission in Afghanistan. From December 1878 - seconded to the General Staff. From 1881 - commander of the 1st rifle brigade. In 1886, Nikolai Grigorievich was promoted to lieutenant general and was appointed head of the 18th infantry division . From 1893 - commander of the 15th army corps, from 1894 - commander of the 14th army corps. From 1899 to 1911 - a member of the Military Council . In 1911 he was appointed a member of the Alexander Committee on the Wounded .

He died on June 27 ( July 10 in a new style) in 1912 in Tsarskoye Selo . He was buried in Vladimir, at the old Prince-Vladimir cemetery .

  • In Bulgaria, Stoletov was elected an honorary citizen of Gabrovo during his lifetime, and one of the peaks of the Shipka Pass was named after him.
  • In Sevastopol , the avenue of the same name was named after him.
  • In Vladimir , a street was named after the Stoletov brothers. Also, their name is Vladimir State University .
