Geography

The district borders on the Smidovich , Leninsky , Obluchensky districts of the EAO, as well as the Khabarovsk Territory and China . The area is 4500 kmΒ².

Nature

The area is surrounded by the foothills of the Small Khingan , the peaks of Poktoy, Pike, Big Ushumun, Churkinsky ridge. It is located in the basin of the lower reaches of the Bira River, its tributaries also flow through the territory of the district: Malaya Bira, Bolshoi and Maly Ushumun, Pereperechnaya, Birushka, etc.

Deposits of combustible minerals (Ushumunskoye brown coal deposit and twelve deposits of peat) and building materials.

History

It was first formed on May 7, 1934, the region became part of the Jewish Autonomous Region after the transformation of the Biro-Bijan region of the Far Eastern Territory [4] . In 1936, the district was abolished, and the entire territory became subordinate to the city of Birobidzhan.

On July 20, 1934, the All-Russian Central Executive Committee decided to "form in the autonomous Jewish national region: 1) the Birobidzhan district with a center in the working village of Birobidzhan " [5] .

On July 2, 1942, the district was again singled out as an independent territorial unit.

Symbols of the municipality

Coat of Arms

On the Spanish shield, in the field of the heraldic green color of freedom, hope, health, in the middle of the shield is a full disk of the sun. This arrangement of the sun is called "Midday" and means perfection, flowering. However, the sun is depicted without such an indispensable sign as rays, in heraldry it is called "The sun in the eclipse." The icon of brown coal is shown on the solar disk, which gives fire - a symbol of heat, life, light, activity, energy. In this case, the β€œSun” is one of the manifestations of light - Fire. Gold color indicates greatness, respect, wealth. Coal is depicted in black - the color of constancy, modesty. The sun and coal are accompanied by two golden ears of wheat - the personification of agriculture. In river heraldry, ponds usually occupy the fourth (belt) lower part of the shield, but in our case, given the abundance of rivers and ponds in which the ancient, southern, relict plant - Lotus - a symbol of life and happiness - was preserved, we allotted the upper lotus and ponds ( place of honor - chest). Silver color - purity, innocence, wisdom, joy. Blue is the color of fame, honor, fidelity and sincerity [6] .
