Opened September 11, 1972 . In total, the system has 5 lines with a total length of 167 km, at which 44 stations are located. In the center of San Francisco, Auckland, Berkeley, under the strait, and also between the Colma and San Bruno stations, the train goes through the tunnel, and the stations in this case look like ordinary metro stations. Between Rockridge and Orinda stations, the train travels through a tunnel in the ridge of mountains that separate the Livermore valleys and San Francisco Bay . At the same time, the train crosses the Hayward mountain fault.

Ceiling of underground stations - noise-absorbing ribbed gratings, walls covered with porous ceramics or painted concrete ; the floor is made of cast concrete. Rough ceramic tiles laid along the edge of the platforms; such a tile helps passengers not slip. Several stations also have elevators .

Thanks to the long hauls, the system is fast, having the highest maximum metro train speed in the world - 130 km / h and operational speed - 70 km / h. The maximum carrying capacity is 40 pairs of 10-wagon trains per hour. Parking at the stations takes 20 seconds. Regulation of traffic volumes, including the number of cars, is carried out depending on the number of passengers. The system of supervisory control and management is used.

The car bodies are made of stainless steel or aluminum alloys (such cars are not painted). The windows of the cars are made with double glazing , there are no windows . The flooring is synthetic. These events significantly reduce the noise in the cars. Also, air conditioners are installed in the cars. Intermediate carriages do not have cabs [2] .

The lines use an automatic locomotive alarm , which also has automatic speed control and a continuous rail circuit . Traffic lights are not applied. The track gauge is atypical for the USA - 1676 mm, selected for better stability and increased speed. This gauge is typical for the countries of the Hindustan Peninsula and Chile with Argentina, but in the United States the standard is 1,435 mm.

Travel along the longest section does not exceed $ 11 for the price and one and a half hours in travel time (yellow line). The fare is paid by magnetic cards, on which a certain amount of money is debited, depending on the distance traveled, or contactless Translink, which are also used on other transportation systems in the San Francisco Bay area . In downtown San Francisco, the system is integrated with the Muni Metro underground tram network.

Lines

The network has 6 lines.

  • The yellow line runs from Pittsburgh via Auckland, San Francisco and Daily City to San Francisco International Airport. And in shortened mode, you can get to Millbray.
  • The red line goes from Richmond through Auckland and San Francisco to Daily City. In shortened mode, you can get to Millbray past the airport.
  • The blue line runs from Daily City via San Francisco, Auckland, San Leandro and Hayward to Dublin.
  • The Auckland Airport line is essentially an automatic loopwheel and connects the main network to Auckland Airport.
  • The orange line runs from Richmond through Auckland, San Leandro, Hayward and Union City to Fremont.
  • The green line runs from Daily City through San Francisco, Auckland, San Leandro, Hayward and Union City to Fremont.
