Gospel narration
( Paolo Veronese , 1562 - 1563 )
The description of this miracle was made only by the Evangelist John :
| On the third day there was a marriage in Cana of Galilee, and the Mother of Jesus was there. Jesus and his disciples were also called for marriage. And as the wine was lacking, the Mother of Jesus said to Him: They have no wine. Jesus says to her: what is to me and to you, the wife? My hour has not yet come. His mother said to the servants: what He says to you, do it. There were six stone aquifers here, standing according to the custom of cleansing the Judean, containing two or three measures each. Jesus says to them: Fill the vessels with water. And they filled them to the top. And he said to them: Now draw and carry to the steward of the feast. And they carried it. When the manager tasted the water that became wine — and he did not know where this wine came from, only the servants who drew the water knew — then the manager calls the groom and tells him: everyone gives good wine first, and when they get drunk, then the worst; and you have saved good wine hitherto. Thus Jesus laid the foundation for miracles in Cana of Galilee and revealed His glory; and his disciples believed on him. ( John 2: 1-11 ) |
The symbolic meaning of a miracle
This is the first miracle performed by Christ. He warns his mother , “ My time has not come yet ,” but at her request he does not refuse to help the groom. The Orthodox and Catholic traditions see this as an expression of the special power of the prayers of the Virgin for people. [one]
Theologians believe that by his presence at the marriage feast and the fulfillment of his first miracle during it, Jesus Christ established and consecrated the sacrament of marriage . [2]
In the interpretation of Cyril of Alexandria, the conversion of water into wine is a symbol of the replacement of the Old Testament by the New . [3] . According to modern biblical scholars, the miracle symbolizes the change of the era of Jewish ritual baths by the Messiah’s age with its abundance of wine and fun [4] .
