Mao is a city in Chad , the capital of the Kanem region and its Kanem department. The population of the city is 13.3 thousand people ( 1993 ), the majority professes Islam , however, there are Protestant and Catholic churches in the city.

The city is located northeast of Lake Chad , on the border of the Sahel and Sahara , about 250 km north of N'Djamena . The vegetation in the area of the city is sparse; Mao lacks water .
Near the city there is a small airport .
