History

The Atommash team made its debut in the championship of the Rostov region in 1979, where it took 4th place. At that time, she represented the Atommash atomic engineering plant. In January 1980, by the decision of the Board of the USSR Sports Committee, Atommash received the right to participate in the USSR Championship among the teams of the second league. Since 1980, Atommash has been a permanent participant in the national championships.

The first two years, the atomic workers only gained experience. In 1980, the team took 13th place out of 18, and the 1981 Atommash Championship finished in last place. And only in transitional matches with the Azov “ Ray ” Volgodons won the right to play in the USSR championship next year. In 1982, Atommash was replaced by the head coach. Instead of Gennady Matveyev, the Volgodonsk team was headed by Anatoly Ivanov, who raised Atommash to eighth place. But next year, atomic workers again spend not very successfully, eventually taking 13th place out of 16.

In 1984, the team was headed by a new head coach - graduate of the Volgograd Institute of Physical Education and Graduate School of the State Institute of Physical Education Alexander Sergeevich Irkhin . Together with the new coach, new players also came, mainly the pupils of the football department of the Rostov Sport boarding school. As a result, the team was transformed. In 1984, Atommash took third place, in 1985 - fifth and in 1986 - fourth.

In the last USSR championship of 1991, the Volgodonsk team took 5th place in the second league, so in 1992, after the collapse of the Soviet Union, it received the right to play in the first league of the Russian championship. True, the team stayed there for only one season. In order to stay in the first league, Atommash only needed one point.

1993 was one of the most unsuccessful for the team. Atommash took 14th place out of 16 and from the next season played in the third league. Almost all the players left the team, only five people remained. But there was a coach who in the shortest possible time created a completely new team out of nothing. It was Valery Nikolaevich Zubakov, who came to the city from Elista. And in 1994, Atommash was already in ninth place (after the 14th, this was undoubtedly a success). However, that season was the last in the history of the team. In difficult times for the country and the city, in order to keep football at a high level, it was decided to combine Atommash with another team from Volgodonsk - Chemist. There was a football club "Volgodonsk" [1] .
