Thornton Niven Wilder ( Eng. Thornton Niven Wilder ; April 17, 1897 - December 7, 1975) - American prose writer, playwright and essayist, Pulitzer Prize winner ( 1928 , 1938 and 1943 ).

Biography

Thornton Wilder was born April 17, 1897 in Madison ( Wisconsin ) in the family of publisher Amos Parker Wilder and journalist Isabella Niven Wilder, a teenager attended a German-language school in Shanghai , where his father held a diplomatic post. During World War I, Wilder served with the U.S. Coast Guard.

He studied at Oberlin College (Ohio) for some time, then entered Yale University . In 1920 , he received a bachelor's degree there, and in 1925 , already at Princeton University , a master's degree. In 1926 , he published his first novel, The Cabala.

From 1930 to 1936 , he taught a course in comparative literature at the University of Chicago . He taught literature at Harvard and several other universities. Member of the Second World War.

On December 7, 1975, Wilder died in a dream in Hamden, Connecticut .
