Biography
Ivan Sprygin was born in Penza in the family of a railwayman, Saransk tradesman Ivan Mikhailovich Sprygin and his legal wife Anna Ivanovna [1] . He graduated from the Penza gymnasium , then Kazan University . For possession of illegal literature in December 1894, he was arrested and brought to justice, however, thanks to an amnesty, he was released and was able to graduate from the university. An unreliable graduate could not continue his career at the university and returned to his native Penza. For some time he taught at the Penza Art College , at the male and female gymnasiums, at the Penza Surveying School . Later he taught at the universities of Penza and Tashkent .
In 1896 he carried out a number of studies on the vegetation of the Penza region. On January 8, 1899, he married Nonna Ivanovna Tsilli (1880-1953), the daughter of a court counselor [2] [3] .
In 1909-1911 he served as a botanist in soil assessment work in the Penza province . From 1911 to 1916, he led botanical expeditions in Central Asia . In the 1920s, he studied the territories for state reserves in Mordovia , the Zhiguli Mountains, and led geobotanical expeditions of the Middle Volga Region to study vegetation for agricultural needs.
The author of the scientific work “Medicinal Plants of the Penza Region”, the last page of which was added three hours before death.
He died in Penza on October 2, 1942 . He was buried at the Mitrofanovsky cemetery in Penza.
Scientific Activities
Ivan Sprygin was one of the organizers of the Penza Society of Science Fans, was its chairman from 1911 to 1929. In 1914, the company petitioned the Environmental Commission of Russia "about the four sites in the Penza province". Then the request was not granted. The first reserve Sprygin was able to organize only in 1919 - the “Poperechenskaya steppe” (it was the third reserve in Russia at the time of its emergence). In Penza, Ivan Sprygin organized a natural history museum, a botanical garden, and a herbarium.
In 1920-1921, he developed the classification of plant steppe communities, the variability of plants, their polymorphism, and the influence on the processes of speciation. He developed the concept of relict plants of the Volga Upland, as well as the methodology for compiling maps of the restored (existing before the start of agriculture) vegetation cover. At the same time, at the initiative of Sprygin, five more plots were reserved in the Penza region, three in the Zhiguli Mountains and two in other areas.
In 1927, Sprygin became the first director of the Srednevolzhsky Reserve , which has been named after him since 1977. A complete inventory of the flora of the reserve was made, 5 new plant species were discovered. Presumably in 1929, Ivan Sprygin published observations about the hominid ( snowman ) in the territory of the Samara bows . [4] . In 1930, Sprygin wrote [5] :
In the near future, the moment will come when everyone will understand the need to protect the basic capital granted to us by nature, at the interest from which we live ... But, unfortunately, this future has not yet arrived. We have long been living not on interest, but on the capital of nature itself. Squander, and then what?
