Biography
Jack Chalker was born December 17, 1944 in Baltimore, Maryland. After leaving school, Jack Chalker was engaged in a variety of things - from the engineering support of rock concerts in the open air in the 60s to computer typing. He collected a huge collection of science fiction and adventure books, at one time this collection was considered one of the best private collections.
In 1958, Jack Chalker joined the Washington Science Fiction Association . In 1960, he began to publish the amateur science fiction magazine Mirage. In 1963, he founded the Baltimore Science Fiction Society .
After graduating from high school, he wanted to become a criminal lawyer, but financial problems forced him to start teaching. Soon Chalker takes a bachelor's degree in history and English at Towson State College and receives a master's degree in art and literature in the history of ideas at Johns Hopkins University. From 1966 to 1978, having retired after the end of military service, Chalker taught history and geography in the Baltimore city school system, until finally success in writing did not allow him to engage exclusively in literary activities.
In addition to the amateur magazine, he founded the publishing house Mirage Press, Ltd. , which published more than thirty books of various genres. Chalker was actively engaged in reading science fiction lectures in private groups, universities, in particular in such an institution as the Smithsonian . He was a member of the Sierra Life Club . Chalker was a big lover of ferries.
In 1978, he married Eve Whitley. The wedding was celebrated on an ancient ferry in the middle of the river.
