Biography

Wilhelm Label was born into the family of Kapelmeister Karl Label, the bandmaster . Wilhelm received his first lessons from Herman Becker. In 1864, the Label entered the Munich Academy of Fine Arts and studied with Hermann Anschütz , Alexander Streuber and Arthur Georg von Ramberg , and since 1868 with Karl Theodor von Piloty . In 1869, he opened a workshop in Munich, which he shares with artists Theodore Alt , Rudolph Hirt du Frenet and Johann Sperl . The portrait of Madame Gedon is considered to be a masterpiece of this early period of Leibl's art, thanks to which he found a friend in the person of Gustave Courbet . The Frenchman Courbet attracted great attention with his realistic works. The label traveled to Paris , where he got acquainted with the work of Eduard Manet . In 1870, in Munich, around Label, artists who professed similar views were united in the so-called Label Circle. These were Wilhelm Trybner , Karl Schuh , Theodor Alt , Karl Hyder, periods also Hans Tom . Since 1873, the Label moved away from Munich's cultural life and lived with the artist Johann Sperl in Burbling and Bad Aibling in Upper Bavaria . In 1892, the Label received a professorship. He was buried in the Wurzburg main cemetery .

Creativity

Wilhelm Label is one of the most famous realist artists in Germany. His paintings, written in Upper Bavaria, have nothing to do with the idyll or joy of the narrative and depict a man without embellishment. His painting, rich in details, after 1890 approaches Impressionism , however, it preserves the closed materiality of images. In his paintings, the label for the most part depicted people.
