Mukaltin ( Althaeae officinalis extract ) is a medicament based on polysaccharides from the herb Althaea officinalis , used to treat colds and acute respiratory diseases as an expectorant ( secretolytic ).

Composition

The composition of the tablets manufactured under the name Mukaltin may currently have significant differences in the number of auxiliary components. These differences depend on the formulation agreed and approved by the specific manufacturer of the drug.

In one embodiment, in addition to 0.05 g dry marshmallow root extract , the tablets contain 0.087 g sodium bicarbonate and 0.16 g tartaric acid , as well as calcium stearate.

An expectorant of plant origin. It contains a mixture of polysaccharides from the herb Althaea officinalis: plant mucus (up to 35%), asparagine , betaine , pectin , starch . It has enveloping, softening, expectorant and anti-inflammatory properties - due to reflex stimulation it enhances the activity of ciliated epithelium and peristalsis of the respiratory bronchioles in combination with increased secretion of bronchial glands . When exposed to the gastric mucosa, the protective effect of the film from plant mucus is longer and more effective, the higher the acidity of the gastric juice.

Indications

Acute and chronic diseases of the respiratory system, accompanied by the formation of difficultly separated sputum of increased viscosity ( tracheobronchitis , COPD , bronchiectatic disease , pneumonia , emphysema , pneumoconiosis , etc.)

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to the components of the drug; peptic ulcer of the stomach and 12 duodenal ulcer , children's age (up to 12 years).

Dosage

Inside, 50-100 mg before meals 3-4 times a day. The course of treatment is 7-14 days. Children can dissolve the tablet in 1/3 cup of warm water.

Side Effects

Dyspeptic disorders (including nausea ), rarely - allergic reactions (urticaria, itching). Treatment: drug withdrawal and symptomatic therapy, which is determined by the doctor.

Interaction

Mukaltin can be prescribed simultaneously with other drugs used in the treatment of bronchopulmonary diseases. Mukaltin should not be used concomitantly with preparations containing codeine and other antitussive drugs that can make it difficult to cough up liquefied sputum.
