Redskins ( English Redskin ) - a word by which Europeans called Indians, especially in the USA . He appeared among the British colonists who settled in New England .
This term has nothing to do with the natural color of the skin of the Indians (from white to dark-skinned). There is a version that it comes from the custom of beotuk - a tribe of the island of Newfoundland , one of the first to come into contact with Europeans, to paint with ocher both face and clothes. [1] It was first recorded in the source of 1699. [2]
In 1992, a group of US Indians turned to the US Patent and Trademark Office , demanding that the word “red skin” be prohibited from being used in company names, sports teams, and trademarks, since the Indians themselves must have the exclusive right to use this term. But this appeal was rejected due to the fact that the term “red-skinned” cannot be legally formulated. [one]
