Seconds-captain - military rank in the cavalry units of the guard of the Russian Empire in 1730-1797. Corresponding to the captain-lieutenant guard. Chin VIII class in the Table of Ranks with the appeal "Your High Honor" .
The title appeared on December 31, 1730 (January 11, 1731) in the regiment of the Horse Guards in connection with the development of the cavalry. Translated as the second captain - the youngest rank of captain .
Doctor of Historical Sciences Leonid Efimovich Shepelev (1928–2016) in his book “The Official World of Russia” explains the existence of the rank of captain-lieutenant and second captain of the army by the fact that all headquarters officers of the guard were nominally listed as chefs in the guard companies and squadrons assigned to them, and the command they were entrusted to the captain-lieutenants and second captains. Other companies were commanded by captains (VII class on the table of ranks ).
In the infantry, the rank of second captain corresponded to the rank of captain-lieutenant .
In 1797, he was replaced by the rank of captain-captain (by the highest order of January 7, 1797), at the same time this rank was introduced in all army forces, where it did not exist before (X class is a class table with the appeal “Your Honor” , but with May 6, 1884 - IX class).
