Microblogging

Microblogging ( English micro-blogging ) - a kind of blogging . Allows users to write short notes and publish them; each such message can be viewed and commented in the chat mode either by anyone, or by a limited group of persons that can be selected by the user. These messages can be transmitted in a variety of ways, including text messages , instant messages , email, or the web interface .

The most popular microblogging service is Twitter , which was launched in July 2006 and in 2007 won the Internet award in the blog category at the South by Southwest conference in Austin [1] .

In May 2007, 111 sites like Twitter were counted in one article worldwide [2] .

Many microblogging sites run on the free GNU social software and support the exchange of messages and comments between them. An example of such a site was Identi.ca before switching to pump.io software.

Mixed Services

Norwegian developers have also opened a service called Folkstr , in which microblogging is integrated with a social network [3] [4] [5] . In 2007, Tumblr [6] [7] opened, featuring the ability to easily share content of different formats, and in May 2008, Plurk started, the hallmarks of which are posting messages on the timeline and easier commenting.

Sites based on the pump.io software (that is, the first web interface to it) support formatting and do not have an unusual restriction on the length of the message, but basically they have a format similar to microblogs inherited from GNU social .

Integration with other sites

Popular social networks Facebook , MySpace and Russian VKontakte also have a microblogging function called “status update” ( English “status update” ) and “status” ( VKontakte ). On Yandex blogs, the microblogging function is called "change your mood."

There are many news services with the same microblogging function. Digg founder Kevin Rose together with three other developers, opened the Pownce service , in which microblogging is integrated with file sharing and invitations. The service was closed in December 2008.

Livejournal and LjChat conflict

On June 1, 2009, various media reported [8] [9] about the launch of the microblogging service for LiveJournal users. However, on June 2, the company SOUP (owner of Livejournal ) denied [10] its involvement in the creation of LjChat.ru and warned its users about the possible risk of entering passwords. Information about the conflict, widely distributed in Runet, led to a change in the identification system in LjChat, making binding to LJ an optional function. However, the service still provides its users with the ability to log in using OpenID , offering to use this option if necessary, the function of duplication ( cross-sharing ) of posts in LiveJournal and the use of the list of friends Livejournal.

VKontakte conflict with users

On August 2, 2010, the VKontakte administration first showed the microblogging mode, which changes the standard view of the user's individual guest book (“Wall”). Thus, on the "wall" you can leave comments on any posts. The record itself is a text, picture, audio or video. The feature was introduced for everyone, but many users did not like the new look. The number of protesters against innovation only according to official figures reached one and a half million. On August 4, the administration of the resource returned to its previous state.

The function, despite the cancellation, was rewritten, it could be activated in the account settings.

On October 20, 2010, the administration again deprived users of the opportunity to abandon the use of microblogging, motivating it with an unacceptably large number of resources that support the possibility of choosing an old design takes away. This spawned a second wave of protests - of much greater intensity. The conflict has reached such a stage when it is already threatening to outgrow the local framework.

The service “Microblogs” on Vkontakte caused a wave of angry publications from its users who are protesting against the changes in the design and the frank administration of the resource of Twitter and Facebook ideas by the administration.

Mail.Ru Group

An attempt was made by Mail.Ru Group , launching Futoubra microblogging service on January 16, 2012. A year after the opening, on December 20, it announced the closure of the project due to the lack of sustainable growth.
