Metatron

According to some sources, it is believed that Metatron stopped Abraham's hand at the moment when he was ready to sacrifice Isaac . Painting by Rembrandt , Der Engel verhindert die Opferung Isaaks , 193 × 133 cm, 1635 (collection of the Hermitage , St. Petersburg )

Metatron , also Mattatron ( Heb. מטטרון ) is the archangel , the highest among the whole host. His name appears in Haggadah , is mentioned in the mystical texts of Kabbalah and in rabbinical literature .

According to the Third (Jewish) book of Enoch, Metatron is the patriarch Enoch , who was taken alive to heaven and placed at the head of angels for his righteousness [1] .

Content

Feature

Metatron is, along with Shekhina , one of the "heavenly intermediaries." The term "Metatron" includes the meanings of a guard, master, messenger, mediator; he is the cause of the epiphany in the sensual world. Metatron is endowed not only with a view of Mercy, but also with a view of Justice; he is not only the “Great Priest” (Kochen ha-gadol), but also the “Grand Prince” (Sar ha-gadol), and the “leader of the heavenly servants”, that is, it embodies both the principle of royal authority and the basis of the priestly or pontific power, which corresponds to its function of "mediator". In general, according to Guenon, this archangel is two-dimensional: the "luminiferous" is identified with Mikael , the "dark" one is identified with Samael [2] .

Metatron lives in the seventh heaven [3] and is the tallest angel, except with the exception of Anafiel . The Zohar describes its size as "equal in width to the whole world." In rabbinical literature, this is how the size of Adam was described before his fall .

Metatron is the first, and he is the last, of the ten archangels of the Briatic world . If we talk about seniority, then Metatron is the youngest angel in the kingdom of heaven. Various roles were attributed to him: the king of angels, the prince of a divine face or presence, the heavenly chancellor, the angel of the Testament, the main among the ministering angels. Metatron identified with Jehovah (Yahweh-Iakh) .

According to Rashi : “Our sages said that this (angel) Metatron, for his name is like the Name of his Lord: his name has the same numerical value (314) as the Almighty [4] ” [5] [6] [7] .

Metatron is the highest in the host of angels and in the world of ethereal heavenly forces; it has no equal and stands directly before the throne of the Creator. The light emanating from him surpasses the light of all other celestial beings, and without his permission, no angel does anything. Part of the radiance from the Heavenly Throne passed to him, and he knows all the secret decisions of the Father who is in heaven (cf. Yalkut, 44).

Etymology

The most widely accepted interpretation is that the Metatron ( μεταθρονιος , metatronios ) is “standing next to the Throne [of God],” or “occupying the throne next to the Throne of God.” The throne is indeed mentioned in the later, Third Book of Enoch, but there is not the slightest hint that its author saw any connection between the name of the archon and his throne. Such an etymological interpretation is doubtful, since the Greek language does not have the word “metatronios”, and it is highly unlikely that this Greek expression was formed or coined by the Jews .

In Talmudic literature, the word "tronos" ( Greek θρόνο никогда ) is never used instead of its Jewish equivalent. On the contrary, the doubling "t" and the ending "- ron" are found in many mystical names in these texts. It is likely that “-on” and “-ron” could be stable and typical components of secret names, rather than semantic syllables. It is possible that the term “Metatron” was chosen for purely symbolic use and represents one of the many secret names with which the texts “ Hezhelot ” abound . The word, originally apparently serving as one of the synonyms for the name as vox mystica , over time completely replaced it .
