Story
It all happened on July 4th. Celebrating graduation, Julie, Helen, Barry and Ray had a fun evening by the sea. Returning home, they are knocking down a man who has taken up a road. Having decided that he is dead, and not wanting unnecessary trouble, they dump the body into the sea. A year passes, and it becomes clear that someone knows their secret, because the direct participants in the incident a year ago begin to receive strange messages containing the inscription I know what you did last summer . The girls begin their own investigation, wanting to find out something specific about the guy who was shot down. Suspicions fall on their former classmate Max, but they soon kill him, and the guys realize that they are in danger - someone who knows what they did last summer is ready to do anything to take revenge on them. Julie read an article in a newspaper and realized that a year ago she and her friends shot down a man named David Egan. She and her friend Helen decide to visit Egan's relatives. Girls come to the old house and get acquainted with the sister of David Missy. She says that a man named Billy Blue visited her before them and that David loved a girl named Susie. Knowing nothing interesting, Julie and Helen leave.
In the meantime, an attempt was made on Barry by a certain man in a fishing coat with a hook in his hand. Julie offers to report to the police, but Barry dissuades her. Helen comes home late and goes to the kitchen, forgetting to close the door behind him, goes to bed. The next morning, the girl notices her indented hair and the inscription "soon" on the mirror. Learning of this, Julie, Barry and Ray come to Helen. Julie suggests that the killer is playing with them and that today, July 4, he will begin his game for real. Helen goes to the Fish Queen festival and takes Barry with him to protect her. Julie visits Missy, and she tells her that David committed suicide and shows a suicide note, but Julie denies this fact. Missy kicks her out of the house.
Helen attends the concert and looks at Barry, who is watching her from the balcony. After a while, an unknown person appears with a hook and kills Barry. Helen calls the police in horror and says that Barry is no more, but no one believes her. Meanwhile, Julie finds an article about David saying that his beloved Susie died in a car accident and that she still had her father, Benjamin Willis. Helen rides with a cop to the police station and sees Fisherman with a broken car. A policeman gets out of the car to help, but the Fisherman pulls out his hook and kills him. Helen runs away from the killer and tries to call the police from the store, but the phone does not work. The girl continues to flee, but the Fisherman catches up with her and brutally kills.
Julie runs to Ray and says that they shot down not Egan, but someone else. Ray tells Julie to get into the boat. At this moment, the girl, seeing the inscription on the vessel "Billy Blue", concludes [ specify ] that Ray is the one who visited Missy, and that he is the Fisherman and the killer. Julie escapes from Ray. When she runs away, she encounters a man whom she turns to for help. He offers shelter on his ship. Going into the cabin, Julie saw photos of herself and her friends, and the man tells her that "teenagers like you need to have fun and bring down people." Julie realizes that in front of her is the one whom she and her friends shot down a year ago - Ben Willis. The girl runs away from the Fisherman, trying to hide from him in the holds of the boat, finds the dead bodies of Barry and Helen. In the meantime, Ray sneaks into Rybak’s boat and engages with him. Willis throws Ray off the ship and follows Julie. Ray manages to get back on the ship, and Ben Willis finds Julie and at the same moment receives a strong blow with a crane arrow in the face. Julie runs to Ray, but the killer rises and grabs the girl. Swinging a hook at Julie, he clings to the rope, and Ray starts the hoist and Ben Willis throws overboard. Julie and Ray are saved. The final picture shows that Julie in the shower again finds a note, but already a note-invitation to a pool party on Saturday afternoon. The girl goes to the shower room and on the shower stall sees the inscription: I still know! and the fisherman attacks her. The screen fades.

About the movie
Relationships and Differences from the Filmmaking Novel
Unlike the film in the novel, teenagers in a car do not hit an adult man, but a child [1] (it is worth noting that the author of the novel, Lois Duncan, killed an 18-year-old daughter in 1989, who was found shot in the head in her own car). In addition, the image of the killer was invented for the film, the place and time of the action were changed, more violence, blood and cruelty were added - in the novel, none of the heroes died or practically did not suffer during the story.
After the release of the film, Lois Duncan herself was indignant at the changes that the creators of the picture made to her story: “I was in an enthusiastic mood until I sat in a chair in a movie theater with a box of popcorn and found that Hollywood turned my teenage suspense -history in a slasher. The scene was moved from the mountains of New Mexico to a fishing village on the east coast. A crazy fisherman, who was not in my book, could kill my characters with his ice hook. The first thing I did when I left the cinema was to call my daughter Carrie and asked me not to let my grandchildren watch it. ”
Artistic Features
The film has many similarities, tricks and stylistics with another, released a year earlier, youth slasher “ Scream ”. The director of the film, Jim Gillespie, said that he was not going to make a slasher, similar to the famous series “ Friday the 13th, ” but on the contrary stated: “ This is a more life-like film, more a return to the Hitchcock style .” [1] Screenwriter Kevin Williamson also said that the film would be more serious and full of emotions, realistic behavior and tension.
Facts [2]
- The guys go to Dawson Beach - a reference to the series Dawson's Creek , for which Kevin Williamson also wrote the script.
- The trailer of the film read - from the creators of the movie "Scream" . Then Dimension Films threatened to sue Columbia Pictures , and the phrase was removed from the commercial.
- In the scene, when Helen escapes from the killer, you can notice the reflection of the operator in the door glass of the store.

- The film has an alternative ending, which was later used as a teaser trailer for the second part. In this scene, Julie communicates with Ray on the Internet, and after a while it becomes clear that the girl is not communicating with her lover. Then the killer appears and pounces on Julie.
- Kevin Williamson wrote the script for the film much earlier than the script Scream , but the author could not sell it to anyone for a long time.
- The action of the scene in which the guys knock down a fisherman was moved from North Carolina to California. According to producer Eric Fig, the authors wanted to find a more hilly and dangerous road.
- Filming lasted 50 days.
- Despite the fact that the characters appear together in most scenes, Ray and Helen did not say a word to each other.
- The murder of Max was added after additional shootings were appointed - the authors considered that this scene would convince the audience that the maniac - most of the film is just intimidating heroes - is a real threat to them.
