Biography

He was born no later than 980 (most likely around 977 ) from the first wife of Vladimir Varyavka Olova (or Olava, according to other information of the “Czech”). He died after 1010 in Novgorod . On the throne of Novgorod, he was replaced at that time by Rostov Prince Yaroslav (the Wise) . The elder brothers of Yaroslav, who could replace Vysheslav in Novgorod, were deprived of this opportunity for various reasons: Izyaslav died in 1001 , and Svyatopolk after 1013 was transferred to Vyshgorod under the supervision of his father.

There is a version of the earlier death of Vysheslav. According to the stories of the sagas, the widow of the Swedish king Eric (d. 993 ) Sigrid Gordaya rejected the matchmaking of the king from Gardariki Rus by the name of Wissawald and burned him with his retinue in the bathhouse after the banquet in honor of the meeting. It happened around 995 . F.A. Brown identified Wissawald with Vsevolod Vladimirovich . But Vsevolod received Volhynia , except perhaps the Mazovian or Polish Princess. In addition, in 995 he was only 11 years old. On the hand of Sigrid, who was about 20 years old, Vysheslav, who was then 16-17 years old and whose lands were located in the vicinity of Sweden , could claim more. For a dynastic marriage held together by agreement, the age difference could not be an obstacle. But Sigrid, and perhaps her entourage, chose an alliance with Denmark , sealed by marriage with the king Sven Viloborody (died 1014 ).

Sigrid ruled for some time on behalf of her young son Olaf . The union of Sweden and Denmark was directed against Vladimir, whose success was probably ambiguously perceived by the neighbors. Around the same time, Jarl Eirik , the son of the Norwegian Jarl Hakon , who found refuge at the Swedish court, captured and burned Ladoga . But, true, this was made out of hatred for King Olaf, who was supported by Vladimir , but with the support of the Swedes. So, the chronological coincidence here is hardly accidental.

It is possible that together with Vysheslav, the uncle of Vladimir Dobrynya died, since somewhere from that time his name disappears from the sources. E. A. Rydzevskaya associated the legend of Sigrid with the influence of legends about the revenge of Olga and critically evaluated her historicity.
