Biography
Born in Kazan. In 1931, the family moved to Moscow. Studied at a music school. During the war - in evacuation in the Urals, she worked in a kindergarten. In 1953 she graduated from Moscow State Pedagogical Institute. V.I. Lenin . She taught at the teacher training college.
She made her debut with poetry in 1955 (in the Literary Newspaper , with a preface by Vladimir Lugovsky ). Since then she has published poetry in leading literary publications. At the same time, in 1960, the poems of Elmira Kotlyar appeared in the Samizdat almanac “Syntax” . In 1961 he entered the Union of Writers of the USSR (on the recommendations of S. Ya. Marshak and P. G. Antokolsky ).
The author of several poetry collections and many books for children. She was engaged in poetic translations from different languages.
After meeting with Alexander Men in 1989, she converted to Orthodoxy [1] .
Awarded a medal. Since the 1990s - a member of the Writers' Union of Moscow. Winner of the New World magazine award for 1997.

This couplet of Elmira Kotlyar from the book "Island of Animals" became an aphorism. It gained popularity after it was played in the film by Eldar Ryazanov’s Garage . It is pronounced by the heroine of Leah Akhedzhakova in the following remark: “One seven-year-old boy wrote a poem like this: A camel has two humps, because life is a struggle!”
