Shakiai ( lit. Šakiai , Rus. Shaki [1] ) is a city in the Marijampolė district of Lithuania , the administrative center of the Shakiai region , 65 km west of Kaunas .

History
Shakiai was first mentioned in 1599.
A church was built here in 1719, and in 1805 a Protestant church. Shakiai received Magdeburg Law in 1776.
As a result of the division of the Commonwealth, the city was part of the Russian Empire [1] .
After 1919, Sakiai became part of the Republic of Lithuania, and in 1940 - into the USSR .
During World War II, a significant part of the city was destroyed.
