Biography
He became a DJ under the impression of a guest performance by British DJ Greg Wilson in Brighton [3] .
Married since 1999 to Zoe Ball . They were on the verge of breaking in 2003, but managed to restore relations. There is a son (born in 2000) and a daughter (born in 2010).
1990s
In 1991, the next project was presented to the public Cook (he basically every time started from scratch, without causing associations with his previous recordings) - acid-jazz band Freakpower . “ Simply Red under acid,” according to Norman himself. Only a frankly commercial single with the odious title “Turn On, Tune In, Cop Out” gets to 2nd place. After the suspension of the Freakpower project, he simultaneously worked under various pseudonyms: Pizzaman, Mighty Dub Katz, and with a bunch of different musicians. Singles signed by all these names are released at small studios and mainly only on vinyl - as a dance underground should.
In 1996, Norman Cook released his new album, Better Living Through Chemistry . The name of the album was taken from a modified advertising slogan of DuPont (1935-1982). This album has become a new generation anthem. The compositions of this album were performed in various styles: funk , soul , techno and the best jazz rhythms of the 1960s and 70s. This album was included in the world collection of electronic music, as one of the best.
In 1998, the new album “ You've Come a Long Way, Baby ” was released. It sounded like a bolt from the blue, no one expected it, but it turned out so that for the whole year since May 1998 the compositions from this album did not leave the lines of all charts without exception. The album was originally released primarily for dance floors, but soon became popular. Behind everything from “Right Here, Right Now” to “ Rockafeller Skank ” stood Norman Cook and his desire to write something outstanding, something that would not be like anything. Indeed, Norman created a very bright and expressive disc, which, according to the public, became the best album of the year. Cook and his small studio in Brighton's hometown have helped in this direction. The song " Rockafeller Skank " gained particular popularity after the appearance in the computer simulator FIFA 99 .
2000s
After the 2002 police ban on speaking in Brighton (due to the death of two people at his concert), Norman received permission in 2006 to play again in his hometown. Since January 1, 2007, he has played in front of an audience of more than 20,000 fans on the coast of the city. Event tickets were allocated only to Brighton residents, although inevitably some were resold to third parties via eBay .
Having been addicted to alcohol for a long time, together with their wife, which, in particular, was an obstacle to the conception of their second child, in early 2009 they decided to go to a rehabilitation center. Spouses managed to cope. Norman Cook was in a rehabilitation clinic in the spring of 2009. In the same year, he declared that from now on he would never drink [4] . “You know, for several years we tried to conceive a child, and nothing, nothing! I stopped drinking in January, and Norm in March, and after a month, bang! It seems that before that we were too drunk, ”said Zoe in a commentary for“ Female First ” [5] . “At one time, it seemed to me that playing sober was simply impossible,” Norman noted in an interview with Sunday Mirror in 2011 [6] .
