The history of drafts competitions in Russia began at the end of the 19th century.

Russian Empire, until 1917
- 1883 - Competition of tasks in the A. Gattsuk Newspaper . The first drafts tournament in Russia. The best - Nikolai Pankratov , Pavel Bobrov.
- Since 1894 the All-Russian Drafts Tournament was held . There were 4 tournaments in total. Winners:
- 1894 - Fedor Kaulen (co-winner Sergey Vorontsov )
- 1895 - Sergey Vorontsov
- 1898 - Fedor Cowlen
- 1901 - Sergey Vorontsov
- April 11 - August 5, 1897. The All-Russian Drafts Tournament by correspondence. Final (18 participants). Winner: Arkady Ovodov
USSR, 1924-1991
The first championship in Russian drafts among men was held in 1924 in Moscow. Its participants were 20 drafts players. Vasily Medkov won. Participants who scored at least 50% of the points received the title of Master of Sports of the USSR . 51 championships of the USSR among men were held. The first championship of the country in Russian drafts among women took place in 1936. 20 athletes also participated in it. E. Sushchinskaya won, not losing a single game [1] . A total of 35 championships were held among women.
Along with Russian drafts, the USSR began to develop stock-cell or international drafts . The first championship in international drafts among men was held in 1954 in Leningrad . The winner was Kiev Iser Kuperman . 37 championships of the USSR among men were held. The first championship in international drafts among women was held in 1975 in the Moldavian town of Bender . The representative of Vilnius Lyubov Travina won . A total of 17 USSR championships were held among women.
By the time of the collapse of the USSR, the Drafts Federation consisted of several million people, including several thousand masters of sports and sportsmen [1] .
Russian Federation
Since 1992, championships of the Russian Federation on international drafts among men and women have been held (in 2001, the tournament for men was not held because of disagreements between the federations). Since 1998, competitions have been held in three three programs: with classic time control ( main program or classic ), with quick time control ( fast program , or quick checkers , or rapid ) and lightning fast time control ( lightning fast program or blitz ). In 2012, due to disagreements between the federations, two tournaments were held called the Russian Championship, one in Suzdal (under the auspices of the FSHR) , the other in Ishimbay (under the auspices of the FSH ).
Also, since 1992, championships of the Russian Federation on Russian drafts among men and women have been held.
Since 2011, championships in reverse drafts (giveaways) have been held.
