The language is Maltese , the Arabian group of the Semitic family of the Afro-Asiatic language macro family . Close to Arabic , but was strongly influenced by Italian and other European languages.

Origin and History
Maltese, probably the descendants of the Phoenicians , who colonized Malta in antiquity. Then, over the centuries, they fell under the power of the Carthaginians , Romans , Byzantines (395–870), Arabs (870–1201), and Normans (from 1201 attached to Sicily). At a later time, Malta owned the Order of John, or Maltese (from 1530), in 1800 - colonized by Great Britain. In 1964, Malta gained self-government within the framework of the Commonwealth of Nations, in 1974 it was proclaimed a republic.
Economy and Culture
The Maltese are engaged in gardening, cattle breeding , fishing, and sailing . Of the crafts, lace dressing, filigree works, and weaving from straw are the most common. In agriculture, viticulture and horticulture play an important role. Potatoes are exported.
A typical type of construction - houses with a gallery in front of the facade. The layout of cities and towns is typical for southern Europe . The capital is rich in architectural monuments, mainly building contributed to the Order of Malta.
Clothing is close to European. The traditional detail of women's clothing is a black cape over a rigid frame ( faldette ).
Strong patriarchal traditions.
