Biography

Seagram Building, New York

Born under the name Shmil Bronfman in the Bessarabian town of Ataki, Soroksky district, one of the eight children of Ihil and Mindl Bronfman. [2] His parents, who were engaged in tobacco growing in Bessarabia, emigrated to the western Canadian province of Saskatchewan (town of Wapella ), then to the town of Brandon in the province of Manitoba , when he was a child. At first, Sam's father and older brothers - Abram ( Abe Bronfman , 1882, Attacks - 1968, Florida ) and Harry ( Harry Bronfman , 1886, Attacks - 1963, Montreal ) - were engaged in the supply of wood, and in 1903 they bought a hotel business in the town of Emerson province Manitoba and after 10 years owned three hotels in Winnipeg .

In 1924, Schmil (now his name was English as Samuel ) independently founded the small distribution company Distillers Corporation in Montreal , initially specializing in inexpensive whiskey . Samuel Bronfman's Distillers Corporation acquired Joseph E. Seagram & Sons, based in Waterloo , Ontario , from Joseph Sigram's heirs in 1928 [3] . Renamed to simply “Seagram Co. The company's New York headquarters was located in the famous Manhattan skyscraper Seagram Building (1958) at 375 Park Avenue (corner of 53rd Street), one of the most famous examples of the international style of modern modern architecture. The building was designed by the daughter of Sam Bronfman - architect Phyllis Lambert (b. 1927).
