Award Procedure

At the first stage, a significant number of nominators (appointed by the Organizing Committee from representatives of major publishers , "thick" magazines , Russian and Russian literary figures, critics and iconic writers) are named after one work published in the reporting year or to a familiar nominator in the form of a manuscript. So the "long list" is formed. It is published in the media with the nomination of each individual work.

At the second stage, the Grand Jury (about 20 people), also formed by the Organizing Committee and consisting mainly of professional literary critics from different directions, evaluates the nominated works. At the same time, the jury never gets together and does not discuss anything collectively. Each critic selects two works from everything read, one of which puts 3 points, and the second - 1 point. The selection results are also published - indicating who voted. The works (5-6) with the highest number of points form a “short list”.

At the third stage, the Small Jury, formed by the Organizing Committee and consisting not so much of professional writers as of enlightened readers, authoritative figures of art, politics and business, makes a choice from the works of the “short list”. Voting takes place during the award process, usually on the last Friday of May in St. Petersburg. If the participants of the Small Jury have submitted the same number of votes for two works, the right to determine the winner is granted to the Honorary Chairman of the Small Jury.

In 2001–2016, the winner received a cash prize equivalent to $ 10,000, which was divided in a 7: 3 ratio between him and the nominee, and became a member of the Small Jury of the next round of the prize. Finalists received incentive prizes equivalent to $ 1,000. Since 2017, the winner receives a cash prize in the amount of 1,000,000 rubles, which is divided in a 9: 1 ratio between him and the nominee, and still becomes a member of the Small Jury of the next cycle of the prize. Finalists receive incentive prizes in the amount of 60,000 rubles. Both the main and incentive prizes are awarded only if the finalists or their proxies are present at the final ceremony [1] .
