Life for Morgan Sullivan ( Jeremy Northam ) seems boring and bleak. He lost his job as an accountant ; he no longer loves his wife. Soon he begins to work for the mysterious company “DigiCorp” ( DigiCorp , “Digital Company”), the essence of his work is to engage in corporate espionage . A new life seems more fascinating to him, he is entrusted with tasks and given a new name. He also gets acquainted with the mysterious woman Rita Foster ( Lucy Liu ).

Morgan enjoys a new, secretive life, attending seminars across the country and transmitting from them, using a secret device (a secret transmitter via satellite ), competitors' speeches (on seemingly mundane topics - the spread of hygiene products or detergents). But, as Rita enlightened him, these boring meetings are just a screen for the sinister operations of the DigiCorp, turning their "spies" into obedient puppets who have lost their "I". She gives him an injection and asks at the next convention not to react at all to what he sees there. A migraine that has begun and a strange pain in the back of his head gives him fear and suspicion.

Indeed, he observes how, under the influence of some kind of drug , the participants in the seminar put on something like helmets and are brainwashed . And although the drug has no effect on him due to the antidote , he still wakes up after flying on a plane under the name of Jack Thorsby and gets a job at Sunways Systems.

In this company, he fails a lie detector test , and this is not a secret for SunWays Systems. They made a deal with a certain Sebastian Rooks (whom no one had ever seen in person), the third unknown party in this film, thanks to which the main character did not lose himself in a brainwashing session and was specially worn by Rita Foster for Sunways Systems. Fearing the two corporations, he is negotiating with SunWay Systems to work as a double disinformation toss agent at DJCorp. The main character understands that he is a pawn and the only clue is the woman - Rita Foster. He decides to act independently: no one can be trusted. In a secret way, they manage to contact Rita and convince her to enter into a deal with Sebastian Rux.

During the last mission from SunWays Systems to throw disinformation from their secret base for DigiCorp, the protagonist begins to implement Sebastian Rooks’ plan - to become a triple agent and conduct not only DigiCorp, as Sunwais Systems wants, but also SunWays Systems.

When traveling to the secret SunWays Systems database, Sullivan gets into a taxi whose driver is the head of the DigiCorp security service: he explains to him that his role as a double agent is known to DigiCorp: he was hired under an agreement with the same unknown Sebastian Rooks for fooling the SunWays Systems. He explains to him the meaninglessness of the life of the protagonist after completing the mission for both SunWay Systems and Sebastian Rooks, and that Morgan Sullivan has only one way out - to betray Sebastian Rooks and transfer to “DigiCorp” a disc removed from the SunWays Systems base . Sullivan is completely confused and trusts in the words of the head of the DigiCorp.

At the time of the escape from the SunWays Systems base, he is still helped by the same Rita Foster, hiring Sebastian Rux. Upon arrival from the scene of the crime in his mansion on the roof of a skyscraper, the protagonist has an attack of fear that as soon as he gives the stolen disk, then it will be eliminated by Sebastian Rux. After waiting for privacy, Morgan Sullivan urgently calls the head of the “DigiCorp” and they pinpoint his location.

In the last minutes of silence, Rita Foster comes into the room with empty champagne glasses and tries to bring Sullivan to the mirror so that he ... personally meets Sebastian Rucks: he is that very Ruks ... And he made the plan to erase his memories, to infiltrate the DigiCorp under the guise of Morgan Sullivan, and Rita would have to lead him in the right direction.

Morgan succumbs to panic. But the storming of the building begins with two corporations: DJCorp and Sunway Systems. Sullivan and Rita run to the roof. The path to salvation is a helicopter that only Sebastian Rooks can control. At the time of panic, his body remembers that you need to press among a bunch of buttons. The helicopter rises above the building, makes a pre-victory flight, in order to show its triumphant face in front of two corporate bosses, who were at that moment on the roof at the same time. Those shocked by what is happening, slowly turn to some squeak from behind and realize that this is a bomb .

Enjoying his genius with a mysterious smile, furrowing the sea on his yacht, Ruks with faithful Rita inserts a stolen disk into the computer. Rita understands that all this was tied up because of her. On disk the latest copy of the order to eliminate it. Ruks tells her that this has already been erased from the memory of the database (which was the last copy), after which he ejects the disk into the sea, kisses Rita, drags on a cigarette.

The last frame is the face of Ruks, after the first puff full of mystery and emotions from recent events.
