Rimatara ( Fr. Rimatara ) - the smallest of the inhabited islands of the archipelago of Tubuaia ( French Polynesia ). Located 550 km south of the island of Tahiti and about 150 km west of the island of Rurutu .

Geography
Rimatara is of volcanic origin. In the center of the island, resembling an oval in shape, there is a plateau whose height varies from 8 to 10 m. The highest point of Rimatara is Mount Oahu (83 m). The total land area is about 8.6 km². The island is surrounded by a reef . Rimatara is covered with dense vegetation, a large number of wild ducks and parrots live.
History
Rimatara was opened in 1810 by a merchant from the island of Tahiti. In 1821 a Protestant mission appeared on the island, and in 1889 a French protectorate was established.

The island of Rimatara and part of the islands of Maria (total area - 1.3 km²) is a commune that is part of the administrative unit of Ostral Island ( Tubuai ).

In 2007, the population of the island was 785 people. The main settlements are the villages of Amaru , Anapoto and Mutuaura .
