Geographical position

Kontiolahti is adjacent to six other communities: Ilomantsi , Joensuu , Kuhmo , Lieksa , Nurmes and Yuuka . The area of ​​Kontiolahti is 1,029.82 km², of which 230.63 km² are water bodies. In total, there are 184 reservoirs in the community, of which the largest are Kheutiyainen, Kangasvesi and Kherajärvi. On the territory of the municipality there are 11 natural areas under the protection of the European Union: Teerisaari-Sisuslahti island, Soikkeli forest, Pöllönvaara-Kruunukangas ridges, Payhola forest, Kolvannuuro gorge, Koli national park , Jouhteinen island, Khuurulampin lakes, Sammak lakes hill Huuhkayanvaara and lakes Heinyavaara and Kyukyanlampi.

History

The Kontiolahti community was founded in 1873. Before that, she was for a long time part of the church parish of Liperi . After World War II , settlers from Ruskeala were stationed in Kontiolahti.

Sport

A few kilometers south of Kontiolahti is a world-class ski stadium. In the sports arena there are places for 10 thousand spectators. Cooling installations allow you to maintain a ski track 1.5 km long starting in October, when there is still no full-fledged snow cover [1] . The stadium features wide ski slopes, maintained in working condition, thanks to special equipment put into operation on October 1, 2004. Ski slopes open every year at the beginning of October, even before the appearance of natural snow cover. The ski track is paid, but available to all ski lovers. For Kontiolahti residents free weekly skiing sessions are available.

The ski stadium hosts the Biathlon World Cup . Kontiolahti also hosted the Biathlon World Championships in 1999 and 2015 . Kontiolahti also has 11 sports clubs in various sports.

Municipal Administration

Since 2013, the head of the municipality has been Hyere Penttil. The City Council consists of 35 people (2018): 12 people from the Social Democratic Party, 12 people from the Finland Center party, 6 people from the Coalition Party, three people from True Finns and two from the Green Party.

Education

In the municipality of Kontiolahti there are nine kindergartens, ten elementary schools (grades 1 to 6), one secondary school (grades 7 to 9) and a gymnasium. Kontiolahti Grammar School was founded in 1974. At the moment, about 220 students are studying there.
