System History

The trolleybus system in Smolensk began to be built in 1976 along the highway Smirnova Square - ul. Industrial - TPP-2, however, the construction was soon mothballed. In the mid-1980s, the project was changed and the constructed route was not involved when the trolleybus opened (1991). Now the line is not in demand and is in an abandoned state. A special role in the creation of a trolleybus service in Smolensk was played by Shulga Valery Ivanovich, who led the Smolensk tram park since 1985. In 1990, he took over as the head of the Smolensk Tram-Trolleybus Office. It was under his leadership that the first trolleybus route in Smolensk was launched. Initially, 10 ZiU-682 machines were operated on it. In 1991, a very rare instance of the KTG-1 hybrid trolleybus was received. It was a freight trolleybus, equipped with not only an electric, but also a gasoline engine and had the ability to ride on electric trolleybus routes as well as on ordinary roads. Unfortunately in the 90s it was sold. Route number 1 was opened in April 1991. Soon, part of route No. 2 was completed - to the Proton plant (now the Arcada NGO). Route No. 2 in its current version (on P. Alekseev St. ) was opened in 1993 on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the liberation of the Smolensk region. From October 29, 2013, route No. 3 operated for some time: Sharm LLC - NPO Arkada, was canceled from April 26, 2014 due to low passenger traffic, and restored to No. 5 from December 10, 2016. Starting November 1, 2015, it was launched new route number 3 8 mkrn. - NGO "Arcade" (previously planned as route No. 2B) [1] . On February 1, 2016, a new route No. 4, 8 microdistrict, was launched. - LLC Sharm.
