History
SIL International arose in 1934 in Arkansas from a small research group whose mission was to familiarize missionaries with basic anthropological and linguistic theories and prepare them for translation activities. From there, the Wycliffe Bible Translators agency began.
The founder of SIL and Wycliffe Bible Translators was W.K. Townsend (1896-1982), who came to realize the importance of translating the Bible into local languages, which was involved in missionary work in Guatemala . One of the first students was K.L. Pike (1912-2000), who later became president of SIL International (1942-1979) and made a huge contribution to the development of the organization. The current presidency is held by J. Waters.
In 1950-1987 training was conducted at the University of Oklahoma ( Norman city ). After a discussion about the missionary activities of SIL activists and their close relationship with military dictatorships in Latin America , relations with the university were terminated. SIL is currently headquartered in Dallas, Texas .
