History

The district was formed by the Decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Council of the Kazakh SSR of October 16, 1939, consisting of two village councils allocated from the Bayanaulsky district, six village councils allocated from the Beskaragai district and part of the territory of the Zhaltyr village council of the Kaganovichi district with a center in the village of Maiskoye .

On the basis of the Decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Council of the Kazakh SSR of January 2, 1963, the May district was liquidated, and its territory became part of the Ermakovsky and Bayanaulsky districts. By a decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Council of the Kazakh SSR of December 31, 1964, he was re-formed with a center in the village of Belogorye (since 1992 - Koktobe ).

In accordance with the Law of the Republic of Kazakhstan dated December 18, 1992 β€œOn the Social Protection of Citizens Affected by Nuclear Tests at the Semipalatinsk Test Nuclear Test Site ”, the villages of Akzharsky and Moldarsky village councils in the May district are assigned to the zone of extreme radiation risk, while the May district itself is assigned to the maximum radiation zone risk.
