Biography

Very little information has been preserved about her life, even the name under which she has remained for centuries is conditionally given to the cathedral in Norwich , near which she was a recluse in a monastery. Belonged to the Roman Catholic Church. At the age of thirty, she suffered a serious illness, during which she experienced several strong spiritual insights. Juliana recovered from her illness and twenty years later wrote down her visions in the book Sixteen Revelations of Divine Love (c. 1393 ). Her experience was widely known in England; she was visited by Margery Kemp for spiritual discussions.

Together with Roll from Hampol and the anonymous author of the treatise, the Cloud of Ignorance belongs to the largest mystics of the English Middle Ages.

Recognition

Juliana was not canonized, but is deeply revered by both Catholics and Protestants. Eliot quoted her revelations in one of his quartets: “Sin is inevitable, but // Everything will be resolved, and // It will be done well” (Little Giding, per. A. Sergeeva ). Thomas Merton called her the greatest English mystic and theologian.

Juliana's modern sculpture adorns the facade of the Anglican church in Norwich.
