Video analysis

Video analysis (another name - “motion capture” from the English. Motion capture ) - recording and processing video information, usually about movements. Video analysis was first developed in biomechanics research, but has recently been widely used in medicine , biomechanics, and computer games .

Video Analysis Principles

There are two main varieties of video analysis. When using the first variety, the video is first recorded on some medium (film or video tape , CD , DVD ), and then processed. Another way is real-time analysis.

Since our world is three-dimensional, in video analysis it is desirable to have three-dimensional information about the movement of objects. For this purpose, two video cameras are used . Video analysis "for the poor" uses only one camera, which may be sufficient in some cases, and the analysis is much simpler.

Since modern electronics and computer technology are largely behind the capabilities of the brain, then, copying what the brain can do (in this case, video analysis), we have to go to simplifications. In video analysis, the simplification lies in the fact that, instead of observing the entire subject, markers are attached to it, the position of which is analyzed. For example, if you need to analyze the movement of the hand, then the markers are attached to the shoulder, elbow, wrist, and in some cases to the fingers. Markers should be contrasted with other objects to make them easier to isolate from the visual scene.

Analysis of the position of the markers is performed by a computer system. As a result of computer analysis, the video is converted into a record of three-dimensional (two-dimensional, in the case of using one camera) movement of markers. Such a system is one of the possible implementations of motion capture technology .

The use of video analysis in research

Video analysis is used in many types of scientific research. An example of an analysis of sperm movement may seem amusing to someone, but such studies are carried out by scientists.

In psychology, video analysis is used to study behavioral patterns, motor development problems in children, and study patterns of coordination and reaction changes, for example, when testing new medications , etc.

Medical practice analysis

The use of a motion analysis system based on optical recording in the clinic is unconditional in comparison with other systems, since there are no devices restricting movement on the patient’s body. Thus, natural motor activity is not distorted.

Video analysis is used in rehabilitation centers. Using a video analysis system, quantitative data are obtained that allow you to evaluate the effectiveness of a particular treatment. Thus, rehabilitation centers can choose the best treatment for each patient.

Video analysis is used in general and pediatric neurology to study various types of motor impairment, to evaluate the treatment outcomes of diseases such as cerebral palsy , Parkinson's disease , stroke , etc.

In traumatology and orthopedics, video analysis is applicable for diagnosing impaired motor function, determining the nature of the pathology , additional analysis when deciding on surgical intervention, postoperative patient rehabilitation, approbation and testing of orthopedic equipment.

Video analysis in film, animation and computer games

With the help of video analysis systems, such powerful computer games as Dungeon Keeper 2 and Mortal Kombat were created . Video analysis was also used in the creation of Omikron: The Nomad Soul , Rise to Honor , Soul Calibur III , The Witcher , Empire: total war, Shadow of Zorro and many others. Using motion capture technology can present a unique opportunity, without leaving the screen, plunge into a fabulous universe, forgetting about joysticks , keyboards , and other manipulators , using conventional webcams to control the game.

In cinema, video analysis was used to create Star Wars , the Titanic , Batman , Terminator-2 . An example like Flight of Fancy is one of the latest achievements in this area, and the Beowulf film is an example of a film shot from beginning to end using this technology.
